Refrigerator full!

We just had a wonderful visit with Mahvash and Mama Aziz. They tacked on a short trip to SLC after attending a family wedding in LA.

It was great to show them our home and a little bit of the city. The downside of the trip was that Mama Aziz was sick the whole trip. She had a terrible cold that landed her in the ER. She was doing better today, but still tired and coughing.

The first night they arrived, we surprised Mama Aziz with a visit with her nephew, Mansoor, who lives in SLC. Mama Aziz hadn't seen him in over six years. We told her we were going out to dinner, and then arrived at his house instead. She was in heaven. Mansoor's family made a full Persian feast for us with all the fixings. We even had a homemade sour cherry juice. Most of the talking was in Farsi, but from what we could understand, everyone had a great time.

Enjoying our Persian feast.

The next day was pretty rough for Mama Aziz. I had to work Friday morning, so Mansoor planned to show Mahvash and Mama Aziz the free health clinic that he helped start. Mama Aziz was feeling pretty bad, so instead, they took a trip to the ER where Mansoor works. Mama ended up on oxygen and strong antibiotics. We took it easy for the rest of the day.

On Saturday, we all had more energy. We started the day with a trip to the Moran Eye Center, where Grant works. Grant did a full eye exam for Mama Aziz. She has been complaining about some eye issues since her cataract surgery a few years ago. Grant was able to find a few things that could be causing the problem.

Then it was Persian cooking time! We went to a local Persian grocery store and got all the ingredients for ghormeh sabzi, fesenjun, and horesh bademjoon. We also purchased yogurt, feta cheese, lavash, pita bread, barbari bread, nuts, and pastries. We went home and Mahvash cooked for hours. The house smelled like we were preparing for a Persian king to dine with us.

Everything Mahvash cooked was out of this world. We will be eating well for the next two weeks! Mahvash and Mama Aziz also bought Grant a rice cooker and another pot for his birthday. As you can tell from the pictures, the food was perfect.

This morning we went to brunch at the beautiful La Caille. The manicured gardens and top-notch food impressed everyone.

Then it was off to the airport. It was a great trip with lots of good food.
